511 BikeMapperSM

The Bike Mapper doesn't provide a turn by turn bike itinerary.

What is the 511 BikeMapperSM?
The 511 BikeMapperSM is an interactive mapping tool that displays all existing Class I, II and III bikeways in the 9-county Bay Area. The 511 BikeMapperSM does not automatically determine the best route for you or provide turn-by-turn directions. Rather, it displays all possible routes within areas you specify and provides tools for you to interact with the map and print the map. This allows you to see all available options and decide for yourself which route to take for bike trips.

There are likely to be gaps in the bike network along your bike trip, so make sure to select your route carefully and obey all rules of the road. While the information in 511 BikeMapperSM is carefully screened, it may still contain some minor inaccuracies. Please email bikemapper@511.org with additions or corrections.

What are Class I, II, & III Bikeways?

  • Class I: Off-Street Shared-Use Path - A bikeway physically separated from motorized vehicular traffic by an open space or barrier. Pedestrians, skaters, wheelchair users, joggers, and other non-motorized users typically use shared-use paths.
  • Class II: Bike Lane - Portion of the roadway that has been designated by striping, signing and pavement markings for the preferential or exclusive use of bicycles. Some cities and counties also define wide shoulders as bike lanes. Always ride about 4 feet from parked cars to avoid the door zone.
  • Class III: On-Street Bike Route - Any road or street designated for bicycle travel. These routes are not for the exclusive use of cyclists. Often, routes include residential streets with low auto volumes and speeds.

Why are there areas where no bikeways are shown?
Blank areas in the map are gaps in the Bay Area bicycle network. Note: these maps only depict existing bikeways, not proposed bikeways.

Entering origin and destination information
You can enter an origin or destination as a street address, an intersection of streets, a landmark (more about landmarks below), or from a map interface (please see help on map for information on how to interact with a map interface). An entry on the address line is required, but the city and zip code are optional. However, entering the city name or zip code will increase your odds of matching exactly the address, intersection or landmark you have entered. If 511 BikeMapperSM finds more than one location for your entry, it will provide a list of matches from which to choose. An origin or destination selected through the map interface will display 'Selected from map' text on the address entry box of the Plan Your Trip page. If you are having problems entering a detailed address, try a zip code or city search.

Why origin or destination address may not be found
511 BikeMapperSM uses a licensed digital map for routing and mapping services. Though this map is very rich in street address attributes, it may not have information for every street within the coverage area of the 511 BikeMapperSM. For example, new commercial or residential developments may not be available yet.

Also, misspelling of street names or wrong street type may result in an incorrect location. Please check your street name and type for better map location results. Narrowing your address search with a city name or zip code may also increase the possibility of finding the proper location. If there is a 'Center St' in more than one cities of the region, your chances of getting an address on Center St. located the first time will be much better if you specified the city/zip code. If you are having problems entering a detailed address, try a zip code or city search.
